5 SIMPLE WAYS TO TRAVEL SUSTAINABLY

We all know that one of the most important ways to live – and travel – sustainably is to go plastic free; there are great alternatives to taking plastic toiletries, water bottles and coffee cups on holiday with us, such as shampoo bars and reusable drinks containers. These simple tips are perhaps less obvious when considering how you might travel more sustainably, but can completely change the impact of your holiday!

  1. CONSIDER A ‘MICRO-GAP’

Why not explore your own country before jetting off somewhere else? Air travel is one of the largest contributors to climate change, so consider a little micro-gap. Who knows, you might discover something pretty epic about where you live, as well as decreasing your carbon footprint.

  2. EAT LESS MEAT

Some countries don’t have the same approach to sourcing meat or animal products locally or ethically, so try going vegetarian on holiday or look out for organic and locally sourced produce!

  3. USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Instead of hiring a car, this can be a really fun (and inexpensive) way to interact with the locals and immerse yourself in local life!

  4. FIND TOUR COMPANIES WHICH HAVE GOOD ETHICAL APPROACHES TO TOURISM

A significant number of major tour operators around the world are making a profit from tourists to the detriment of the environment. Take some time before your trip to find eco-friendly options for your holiday activities. Maybe you’ll be able to help with the conservation of the location you’re visiting.

  5. GO LOCAL

Whether this is with trying the local food or buying handcrafted souvenirs, it is so important to support local communities and businesses instead of just sticking to the ‘safer’ or more westernised chain restaurants and big businesses.
